• Youth Group Seashore Sleepover Planning Guide The first hour of the sleepover, 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., is designated as arrival time. Please note that registration for the sleepover only includes admission to the Aquarium during the hours of 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. the next morning. If you plan to visit the Aquarium earlier during the day of the sleepover, or the following day, you must purchase Aquarium admission tickets. Groups of 12 or more individuals can receive a group rate by purchasing advance tickets. Please call the Reservation Center for details at (866) 963-9645.
• We do not have staff at the doors after 8:00 p.m. – late arrival is difficult to accommodate. Please call the Reservation Center in advance at (866) 963-9645, during business hours, if you absolutely must arrive late. If you are unexpectedly delayed on your way to the sleepover you may contact our Security Office at (831) 648-4840.
• Campers will enter the Aquarium through the Members’ Entrance on Hovden Way.
• When you arrive, you will stow all your camping gear. You will retrieve your camping gear when it is time to set up your assigned sleeping areas at approximately 9:45 p.m.

Parking:

• Most street parking near the Aquarium is either time-limited or metered. Many of the meters are monitored until 8:00 or 10:00 p.m.
• Overnight parking is available in a city garage located at Foam and Hoffman streets, or a city parking lot located at Foam and Irving streets.
• If your group will be arriving by bus, there is free parking for buses along Foam Street adjacent to the city parking lot.
• You can drop off camping gear in the pullout directly in front of the Aquarium (cars only) or across the street in the bus turnaround (cars or buses).

Sleeping areas:

• Each youth group participating in the sleepover will be assigned to sleep in specific exhibit areas based on the size of your group. You will be informed of your assigned sleeping areas at the sleepover orientation.
• Individual youth participants should be assigned to specific chaperones and must sleep in proximity to one another.

Food:

• You will not be allowed to bring food or drink into the Aquarium.
• Dinner is NOT included in the sleepover – please eat before you arrive.
• There will be a light snack of cookies, milk, fruit and water before bedtime.
• The continental breakfast includes hot and cold cereal, muffins or pastry, assorted fruit, milk, tea, coffee and juice.
• Breakfast is served between 7:00-8:00 a.m.
• Food is prepared in house using and/or alongside foods that may cause allergies, such as eggs, peanuts and nuts.

Smoke-Free Environment Policy:

• To promote the health and well-being of our guests and employees, smoking is prohibited by all persons anywhere on Aquarium property.

Gift and Bookstore:

• The Gift and Bookstore will be open from 8:00 to 8:30 a.m. for campers who wish to make purchases.
• Chaperones must accompany youth campers in the Gift and Bookstore.

Recruiting and Preparing Your Chaperones:

• Chaperones are responsible for the behavior and safety of the youth campers. Equally important, they help shape the experience for the young people during the sleepover. Please carefully select and prepare your chaperones ahead of time.
• We require one chaperone for every 5 youth. If you arrive with less than one chaperone for every 5 youth campers, your group will not be admitted to the sleepover and there will be no refund.
• All chaperones must be at least 21 years of age.
• Please share the Aquarium’s behavior expectations with each of your chaperones.
• Please bring a signed copy of the Aquarium’s Behavior Contract with you for check-in at the sleepover.
• Please make a copy of the enclosed Chaperone Agreement for each chaperone. Have them bring a signed copy with them for check-in when they arrive.
• Provide each chaperone with a list of the students for whom they are responsible during the sleepover. Be sure to introduce all youth campers to their chaperones.
• If your chaperones are also driving, provide them with maps and parking information.
• Please make arrangements so that your entire group arrives at the sleepover at the same time.
• Emergencies: Security staff is on site throughout the night. Group leaders should have permission slips for all youth campers with emergency contact information in case of a medical emergency during the sleepover.

Evening Activities

• We plan a variety of activities throughout the evening for our campers. Activities may vary somewhat from one sleepover event to another. Campers and chaperones are free to choose the activities in which they wish to participate. You may also use the evening time for self-guided exploration of the Aquarium. Please keep in mind that some exhibits close earlier than others.
• Chaperones should always stay with their group even during late-night activities.
• Campers may set up their gear in their designated sleeping areas at approximately 9:45 p.m. and lights begin to go down at 10:30 p.m. depending on the exhibit space. All exhibit lights go out by 11:00 p.m.
• Exhibit areas vary overnight in terms of light levels, sleeping space and ambient noise. For the safety of our animals, some exhibit windows may be blocked (either with a curtain, bubble curtain or black exterior screens) during portions of the night. The Monterey Bay Habitats exhibit is one such area (black screens) and penguins, other birds and leafy and weedy sea dragons (curtains).
• We cannot accommodate an earlier bedtime, as camping gear in exhibit spaces would limit all campers’ access to the exhibits.
• For those who want to stay up later, we offer a few late-night activities. It is up to the chaperones and their groups to decide if they want to attend these activities. Youth campers must have a chaperone with their group to attend the late-night activities.
• Final bedtime for ALL campers is midnight.
• Wake up is at 7:00 a.m. All campers must immediately pack up their gear and stow it. All campers must vacate the exhibit areas by 7:45 a.m.
• Morning activities: Rolling up camping gear, breakfast and informal naturalist chats on the back deck.

What to Bring/What Not to Bring

• Aquarium floors are hard – we recommend you bring some kind of pad to sleep on with your sleeping bag.
• Pajamas, toothbrush, toothpaste and face towel. There are no shower facilities.
• Pillow
• Camera
• You will be sleeping in exhibit areas of the Aquarium. You may want to bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper.

What not to bring:

• food or drinks
•  tents (these block the view to the exhibits for other campers) o radios, music/MP3 players or electronic toys

Cell phones should be put on silent mode.  The Aquarium is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen items
